My name is Neysha. I grew up in an art supply store/junk yard in South Louisiana. My childhood was filled with exploration and creation. My family is full of artists and makers. I’m not sure if it’s in our blood, or if we cultivated an environment for our own artistic comfort. Making and tinkering isn’t something I can turn off. My mind is constantly racing, juxtaposing mundane objects together to create something new. My hands are constantly failing to keep up with my ideas, but they’re always working.
I’m classically trained in fine arts. I was accepted into Lafayette Parish’s Arts Academy from 6th to 12th grade. At the same time, I started my training in cultural dances from around the world. I worked at Jefferson Street Market/ Gallerie Lafayette from 2003 until they closed in 2010. I also worked at Beaucoup Beads as an instructor and designer for three years. I studied painting aboard in Paris. I received by Bachelors of Fine Arts from University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2011. I’ve traveled and studied Middle Eastern dance from many masters. I’ve also taught Middle Eastern dance. I am performer. I’ve been invited to dance in other countries. I make costumes for science fiction conventions. I’ve been invited as a guest and performer to dozens of ComicCons. I’ve designed and made costumes for Mardi Gras events including the Courir de Mardi Gras, traditional balls, and satirical Mardi Gras. I designed and made costumes for plays, ballets, Halloween, and other events. I was the costume designer for the musical JAMBALAYA. I’ve designed and made costumes for the Ballet Academie’s performances. I currently teach watercolor painting, acrylic painting, and jewelry making.
I don’t tend to only use one medium when I create, but one of the most important aspects of my work is upcycling. I try to reuse and repurpose as much as possible when I make new things. I love using new mediums and mixing unconventional items together. My work is usually wearable, and is often described as costuming.
